Book on Obama Hopes to Repeat Anti-Kerry Feat

A new book by Jerome Corsi - co-author of the Swift Boat Veterans book that plagued John Kerry's 2004 campaign - is now targeting Obama with a variety of accusations that many claim are misleading or untrue.

In the summer of 2004 the conservative gadfly Jerome R. Corsi shot to the top of the best-seller lists as co-author of "Unfit for Command," the book attacking Senator John Kerry's record on a Vietnam War swiftboat that began the larger damaging campaign against Mr. Kerry's war credentials as he sought the presidency.

Almost exactly four years after that campaign began, Mr. Corsi has released a new attack book painting Senator Barack Obama, the Democrats' presumed presidential nominee, as a stealth radical liberal who has tried to cover up "extensive connections to Islam" - Mr. Obama is Christian - and questioning whether his admitted experimentation with drugs in high school and college ever ceased.

Significant parts of the book, whose subtitle is "Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality," have already been challenged as misleading or false in the days since its debut on Aug. 1. Nonetheless, it is to make its first appearance on The New York Times best-seller list for nonfiction hardcovers this Sunday - at No. 1.

The book is being pushed along by a large volume of bulk sales, intense voter interest in Mr. Obama and a broad marketing campaign that has already included 100 author interviews with talk radio hosts across the country, like Sean Hannity and G. Gordon Liddy, Mr. Corsi said on Tuesday.

The publisher is Threshold Editions, a division of Simon & Schuster whose chief editor is Mary Matalin, the former Republican operative turned publisher-pundit. And it is a significant, early success for Ms. Matalin's three-year-old imprint, which is also planning to publish the memoirs of Karl Rove, President Bush's longtime political guru. Threshold says it has undertaken an extensive printing effort for anticipated demand, with 475,000 copies of "The Obama Nation" produced so far.

"The goal is to defeat Obama," Mr. Corsi said in a telephone interview. "I don't want Obama to be in office."

He said he was planning to aid several conservative groups that intend to run advertisements against Mr. Obama this fall, though he would not name them.

Mr. Corsi, who has over the years also written critically about Senator John McCain, Mr. Obama's probable Republican opponent, said he supported the Constitution Party presidential nominee, Chuck Baldwin, and had not been in touch with McCain aides. He called his reporting on Mr. Obama, which he stands by, "investigative," not prosecutorial.

Ms. Matalin said in an interview that the book "was not designed to be, and does not set out to be, a political book," calling it, rather, "a piece of scholarship, and a good one at that." She said she was unaware of efforts to link it to any anti-Obama advertising.

In its timing, authorship and style of reporting, the book is strikingly reminiscent of the one Mr. Corsi wrote with John O'Neill about Mr. Kerry, "Unfit for Command," which included various accusations that were ultimately undermined by news reports pointing out the contradictions. (Some critics of Mr. Kerry quoted in the book had earlier praised his bravery in incidents they were now asserting he had fabricated; one had earned a medal for bravery in a gun battle he accused Mr. Kerry of concocting.)

But books like "Unfit for Command," which remained for some 12 weeks on the Times best-seller list, and, now, "The Obama Nation," have become an effective and favored delivery system for political attacks. There have been anti-Clinton (both Bill and Hillary) and anti-Bush books too numerous to name. The sensational findings in these books, true or dubious, can quickly come to dominate the larger political discussion in the news media, especially on cable television and the less readily detectible confines of talk radio and partisan Web sites.

Fact-checking the books can require extensive labor and time from independent journalists, whose work often trails behind the media echo chamber.

Web sites on the left have begun poring over Mr. Corsi's latest book. Media Matters, which is run by David Brock, a former right-wing journalist who wrote a classic of the attack genre, "The Real Anita Hill," has been particularly aggressive in fact-checking the book, and its press releases on inaccuracies in the book have gotten some attention on cable television.

Several of the book's accusations, in fact, are unsubstantiated, misleading or inaccurate.

For instance, Mr. Corsi writes that Mr. Obama had "yet to answer" whether he "stopped using marijuana and cocaine completely in college, or whether his drug usage extended to his law school days or beyond." "How about in the U.S. Senate?" Mr. Corsi asks.

But Mr. Obama, who admitted to occasional marijuana and cocaine use in his high school and early college years, wrote in his memoir that he had "stopped getting high" when he moved to New York in the early 1980s. And in 2003 The State Journal-Register of Springfield, Ill., quoted him responding to a question of his drug use by saying, "I haven't done anything since I was 20 years old."

In an interview, Mr. Corsi said "self-reporting, by people who have used drugs, as to when they stopped is inherently unreliable."

In exploring Mr. Obama's denials that he had been present for the more incendiary sermons of his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., Mr. Corsi cites a report on the conservative Web site NewsMax.com that Mr. Obama had attended a sermon on July 22, 2007, in which Mr. Wright blamed "the 'white arrogance' of America's Caucasian majority for the world's suffering, especially the oppression of blacks."

Mr. Obama, however, was giving a speech in Florida that afternoon, and his campaign reported he had not attended Mr. Wright's church that day.

William Kristol, a columnist for The New York Times, had cited the same report in a column, and issued a correction. "There is a dispute about the date, and Kristol chose to side with Obama," Mr. Corsi said. "We can nitpick the date to death," he added, saying his "fundamental point" was Mr. Obama's close association with someone ascribing to "black liberation theology."

Mr. Corsi described most of the critiques of his book as "nitpicking," like a contradiction of his claim that Mr. Obama had failed to dedicate his book "Dreams of My Father" to his family; Mr. Obama dedicated the book to several family members, in the introduction.

Mr. Corsi called the Media Matters critique inconsequential because it was advancing a liberal, political agenda.

Media Matters was created in part to answer a conservative "echo chamber" - one that liberal activists say they have still yet to match - that gives books like Mr. Corsi's extra bounce.

"There's just no doubt that in terms of longer-term infrastructure, there's more out there on the right than there is on the left," said Cliff Schecter, author of a liberal attack book on Mr. McCain, "The Real McCain," which, with 35,000 copies in print, did not make the Times bestseller list.

Mr. Obama's campaign has yet to weigh in heavily on Mr. Corsi's accusations. It appears to face the classic decision between the risk of publicizing the book's claims by addressing them and the risk of letting them sink into the public debate with no response.

"This book is nothing but a series of lies that were long ago discredited, written by an individual who was discredited after he wrote a similar book to help George Bush and Dick Cheney get re-elected four years ago," said Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for Mr. Obama. "The reality is that there are many lie-filled books like this in the works cobbled together from the Internet to make money off of a presidential campaign." He added, "We will respond to these smears forcefully."

Several Democrats associated with Mr. Kerry's campaign in 2004 said in interviews Tuesday that they were comfortable so far with Mr. Obama's more muted response to the book, which has not showed up yet in television advertisements.

Even Mr. Corsi said this book did not have what "Unfit for Command" had: a built-in interest group, the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth, to run advertisements against its target.

While he said he thought it was a certainty that he would be "assisting in the creation of ads in the fall," he did not say what he believed their content would be.

Matalin is an unmitigated

Matalin is an unmitigated jerk. According to the quote, SHE says: ... the book "was not designed to be, and does not set out to be, a political book," calling it, rather, "a piece of scholarship, and a good one at that." And MR. CORSI says: "The goal is to defeat Obama," Mr. Corsi said in a telephone interview. "I don't want Obama to be in office." How incredibly sad that such great options for communication are so easily perverted to spread crap like this. How incredibly sad.

Yawn. Right wing attacks are

Yawn. Right wing attacks are a given. Obama has more important concerns. Near the top of the list is the blurring of brand differentiation. By steadily moving to the right, he has lost the enthusiasm he generated with his earlier message. Yes, I will still vote against McCain, but I am much less likely to put up yard signs and so forth. Even if losing the progressive wing is exactly what Obama's DLC/neo-lib advisors are aiming for, I still cannot bring myself to work for his candidacy, any more than I could for Kerry in 2004.

Germany ultimately paid with

Germany ultimately paid with its destruction for the sins of its "Republicans." Are we boxed in to the point that this will also be our fate? The only fate that may allow America to escape this Republican right wing poison?

Americans aren't idiots;

Americans aren't idiots; we're just peddled superficial information in the mainstream, such as ephemeral words and ideas that should never have been placed in the presses. There was a time when publishing was a reflective practice, and one has to wonder how long greed will sustain the drab and the useless. It would be nice to see a truly useful media in the mainstream during my lifetime, and with that said it is unfortunate that so many of us have to witness a small fraction of our society treating others like dimwits.

I'm not ready to concede any

I'm not ready to concede any significant gains to the Republicans on this one yet. They are running low on tricks and must be desperate to launch this so early. It has truly been mis-catalogued, however. Given all the inaccuracies, perhaps it qualifies better to be placed in the fiction category. In the end, greed becomes the undoing of unscrupulous people, and it will be the undoing of the Republican party along with the corporate/Wall Street/old money conglomerate that has worked so hard to maintain its stranglehold on power to keep the troughs full for their own feeding frenzies. Change is on its way in the United States, one way or another. It may be delayed, but it cannot be prevented, short of the creation of a totalitarian state, because the tide has already turned. You can see it and feel it, and it will continue inexorably. It will happen in the voting booth (preferably) or it will happen on the streets, tragically. If that unthinkable (but possible) scenario occurs, Neocons will recognize what a mistake it was for them to have promoted widespread and uncontrolled gun ownership. With troops deployed all over the world, there will be insufficient resources at home to deal with the inevitable insurrections that will occur if more assaults on the Constitution take place. I doubt that the gate controlled enclaves within which the self proclaimed "chosen" savor their riches will be sufficient for protecting them from the fury that will ensue under such conditions. Bozos like Corsi are so egotistical that they can't imagine their own undoing. It's sad really. But one cannot help but take some small pleasure in imagining the bit of insight that would reveal itself in their faces when they suddenly realize that the scam is over.

Here we go--the Swiftboating

Here we go--the Swiftboating begins--a thousand knives being thrown at Obama. The new, wholly fictitious book by the guy who Swiftboated Kerry. Corsi doesn't care if he tells the truth or not, as long as he makes people doubt Obama. Add Fox News to the mix—as well as the talk radio devils, and it will be a miracle if this excellent candidate is elected. McCain promised he would not wage a campaign of personal attacks. Why has he as he not refuted any of this garbage being put out in his name? Why does McCain get a free ride, even from the supposedly neutral other cable networks and from the press when he's switched positions almost weekly? Why has his philandering not been scrutinized? I think the most insidious of the things put out about Obama is the “We don’t know who he is” line. What is this insanity? Will all of these tactics (and I suspect there's worse to come) succeed in making voters fearful to elect a President who had the good judgment to say "no" to the first preemptive war this country has waged; who has the wisdom and mental capacity, beyond his years, to think through to reasonable solutions; who wants the drowning-in- profits oil corporations to pay their fair share of taxes? Will the voters really choose the bellicose McCain who is still fighting the Vietnam war, who's impulsivity and flashpoint temper will repeatedly get us into war after war. War is McCain's life! We are in a mess now, but the election of McCain on the basis of this dirty and dishonest campaign against Obama will finish this country as the America we know

No has quite figured out

No has quite figured out that the Republicans have turned this book into a bestseller by buying up the book in bulk orders, which shoots it artificially to the bestseller list. It is actually easy for any book to appear to be a bestseller, in some categories, like Self Help, you can get 8,000 orders of a book out there, and the book is on the list. Some publishing companies have been doing this scam for years. That the book is the same old "same old" sleaze is no shocker. That it should get the attention it does is revolting, but after 8 years of Bush Jr., it's hard to be revolted anymore. It is another example of no one going broke by underestimating the brains of the American people.

How low the publishing

How low the publishing company has sunk for the big bucks. It seems the only thing that sells is sleaze . Where are the voices to denounce this debacle. I am fed up, disgusted , and can only hope that these war mongering disgusting republicans face a slow and humiliating exit from the political arena. My America is no more and has been transformed into the first circle of hell.

Don't worry, your average

Don't worry, your average republican can't read, and the ones who can were still going to vote for McSame anyway. They do know how to lie however.

Republicans are scum.

Republicans are scum.

That the GOP embraces the

That the GOP embraces the lies and mud-slinging is no surprise. That John McCain does is surprising given that he previously rejected such tactics. As a veteran who would have voted for McCain in 2000, I'm offended by his new alliances with rumor-mongers like Corsi and others and will not be supporting him this time around.

Unfortunately there are many

Unfortunately there are many people out there--rabid Republicans and racists who want negative comments about Obama. They don't care if they're true or false. I have received numerous smear emails against this man. Sadly the facts are that he seems to be a decent human being in spite of having to play ball with the politicos. On the other hand, there are some facts about John McCain that are not pretty. He's the only known pow that gained weight in prison instead of losing it. He's been quick to brawl all his life and has even attacked his cohorts in Congress both verbally and physically When he came home from Viet Nam, he drank and ran around with other women (this is in his bio on wikipedia) His wife, Carol, had been in a terrible auto accident, lost around 4 inches in height and had to learn to walk all over again--but he dumped her and his kids for a much younger, much richer woman--Cindy Hinsley, millionaire daughter of a beer baron. He's even called Cindy the "c-word" in front of 3 Arizona reporters back in 1992--all because she remarked that his hair was getting thin on top. His excuse was that it had been a long, hard day of campaigning. That would have come out earlier, but the reporters didn't quite know how to report such filthy language. That's in the book" The Real McCain." by Cliff Schecter. We don't need a president who says he can win wars--we need a president who wants to win peace. I'm sick of war and the old men who want to sacrifice our young men and women to endless, unnecessary wars.

How is it that two people

How is it that two people like Mary Matlin and James Carville, who are in the apex of their parties doings, can live together and keep each others business separate? Sometimes I wonder. They are not just a couple with differing points of view, they are players in the machinations of things. JUST ASKING? OBAMA CAN!

All I know about Corsi's

All I know about Corsi's book is what we all heard on Larry King. Do we all care about who he is beholden to? For that matter, all the GOP people and their lies? Let's make tomorrow a day when everyone in the nation memorizes the 10 commandments. Remembering first of all, that the Lord God who will judge all of us does not consider any one of His commandments less important than the other..."Thou shalt not bear false witness" (to lie) is no less worthy of consideration, than "Thou shalt not steal" or "Thou shalt not kill". A wise man has issued an inspirational book entitled "The Greatest Virtue" and goes on to consider "Humility" is the greatest virtue! Think about it, if this is true, where would you consider your "virtue"? Let's begin to think and act responsibly in our great America....we have been talked to as if all of us are virtual idiots, and only the smart folks offer to us their nasty opinions and 'policies'. I was raised a Christian and a life-long Democrat. What I wouldn't give for a half day of conversation with my deceased dad re. today's political mess and attitude toward the people of this democracy! He was a WWI vet and at age 18 spent weeks in France. Whether you asked for it or not, you were entitled to his opinion. This SD farmer was uneducated but terribly aware. He would be very excited about a young mulatto with an intelligent and humble mind that wants to change our America's sick current system.

Nothing is going to change

Nothing is going to change my vote. Democrat, the rest of my life, probably. Former Republican, a betrayed Republican, a Reformed Democrat

Manipulate the information

Manipulate the information to achieve your desired outcome. The Republican base will love this book. Democrats will denounce it. No matter how many lies in the book are proven false some people will believe it because they do not understand information warfare. One thing is certain, Karl Rove understands it

James Carville, hubby of

James Carville, hubby of Typhoid Mary Matalin, was just on CNN....how can he live with that walking & talking lies & deception machine ? Is he really a Democrat or a stealth invader only after the $$$$.... Obama will respond and strongly...hold on to your seats.

To me, what is really sad

To me, what is really sad and tragic is the fact that only people incapable of thinking for themselves or so broken in spirit that they are unwilling to make the effort to get to the facts would fall for this type of smear campaign which is all too common in the US political arena. I am inclined to fault the educational system for the fact that a vast portion of our society evidently falls within this category. Critical thinking skills are sadly lacking, I believe, because educators, many of whom themselves appear to lack analytical thinking skills, have failed to do their job. Training people for gainful employment, and to defer unquestioningly to authority is not education. Mr. Corsi's book will be treated with the derision it deserves by thinking Americans. It will undoubtedly find favor among the other constituency. God help us.

If the death penalty was a

If the death penalty was a consequence of cowardly traitorous and treasonous publishing maybe America would again see honesty in the media.

'Ms. Matalin said in an

'Ms. Matalin said in an interview that the book "was not designed to be, and does not set out to be, a political book," calling it, rather, "a piece of scholarship, and a good one at that."' 'Mr. Corsi called the Media Matters critique inconsequential because it was advancing a liberal, political agenda.' When I was teaching logic, Corsi's response was called poisoning the well, the fallacy of attempting to forestall all criticism by dismissing all possible critics. Although such a move does turn up in so-called scholarship, it also makes such work so-called. Sorry, Ms Maitland, you know not whereof you speak. Mr Corsi, little more than a foaming at the mouth right wing attack dog, ought to be defanged, or at least muzzled, to prevent harm to innocents too trusting of books. Simon and Schuster should be boycotted for publishing and hyping such droolings. Oops, forgot. There are no limits in pursuit of the almighty buck--at least if you got a big enough stable of legal whores to service your craving.

Would this have received the

Would this have received the coverage it has if it had not gotten the Best Seller listing from the NY Times? Why is it listed under non-fiction since so much of it is Fiction. Also, I assume it must have been published by some significant publishing firm for it to have great enough distribution is major bookstores so who publishes such trash? Certainly if I self published I couldn't afford the initial cost of enough books to stock major bookstores. I would imagine that it is all about buzz and money. Just look at the cover and name. There is a lot of curiosity out there about Obama. How many people have bought the book without realizing what they were buying? Many books that are best sellers soon retreat into the background as the hype recedes. Why does the media, Larry King, etc give time for liars to repeat their lies. Even if an interviewer does a good job in debunking the views it is as the saying goes, "No publicity is bad publicity".

one question to ask the

one question to ask the author is..is he still beating his mate? And how long did he remain a choir boy? This campaign is nasty enough without opportunistic dabblers trying to make a buck.

Sue Corsi for libel, and ask

Sue Corsi for libel, and ask for many millions of dollars. The stakes attached to Corsi's lies are so large, regarding the reputation of a presidential candidate, that the award of damages should be quite substantial.

And you are the ultra

And you are the ultra liberal gadflies who would rather inflame emotions than consider the facts. Democrats can't win on facts, so you have to inflame the emotions! But, what purpose does the NY Times serve, if not to mis educate the public? je

I WISH! If only it were

I WISH! If only it were true that Obama were a "stealth radical liberal." What a load of BS. He's a through-and-through pro-war corporate tool--his campaign coffers, Senate record and published words prove it. Swift-boat away! It doesn't matter.

Surprised this hasn't

Surprised this hasn't already begun but I guess they had to rush the book to end. And, I bet it will not be surprising at how many will take this as the truth. But hopefully if john kerry did anything, it was to show how NOT to respond to these clown's accusations. And still, with the way that mccain's campaign is running it would seem a miracle for him to win. But that is where diebold and es&s come in. I would bet that both those companies have helped get people elected at least from the republican takeover of congress in 1994 through 2004. Consider the head of diebold brazen proclamation in 2003 of his 'duty to give w Ohio', that alone should have landed this crook in jail for a long long time. So don't ever think that anything is a given, we are fighting a war where the neocons and republicans will do what they can to remain in some gateway of power.

When the Gop paid Vietnam

When the Gop paid Vietnam veterans to lie about John Kerry's war record, even they were surprised at how these false accusations were repeated ad infinitum, despite the fact that they contained not a shred of truth. Given the conservative domination of the American media, it is of course predictable that the same thing would happen this time around. More lies from an increasingly desperate right. Of course they have a huge advantage, not only in the conservative bias of the media, but in the way issues are 'covered.' Once upon a time, reporters would check facts to make sure that the stories they reported were true. Today, actual reporting is nonexistent. The rationale today is, "Well, somebody said something, and we dutifully repeated it, and it is up to you, the consumer, to decide if it is true." This is why so many conservative talking points are passed off as news. Isn't it entertaining to think about how Democrats with some guts like Tip O'Neill or Lyndon Johnson would have reacted to these kind of smears?
